CITY PLANS TO REOPEN SECTION OF F.M. 3537 AT 4 A.M. MONDAY, MAY 12;
DISCARDED CIGARETTE BLAMED FOR SPARKING FIRE THAT FORCED ROAD CLOSURE
(May 11, 2008) Beginning at 4 a.m. tomorrow morning, Monday, May 12, city
crews plan to reopen the section of F.M. 3537 that has been closed all day
due to a nearby fire fueled by hay bales.
Fire investigators have also determined a discarded cigarette started the
fire, which forced the closure of F.M. 3537, between Independence and
Custer Road, early this morning. This section of roadway is commonly
called 'East Main Street'.
Firefighters, along with crews from the city's Public Works and
Engineering Departments, remain on the scene after spending the day
managing and monitoring the fire, which continues to smolder.
Firefighters say motorists may smell and see some smoke tomorrow morning;
however, visibility in the area is improving and, firefighters say they
anticipate visibility will continue to improve throughout the night. Crews
will stay at the scene overnight. Motorists should continue to use caution
in the area.
