FRISCO'S NEXT PUBLIC ART SHOW, 'ART IN THE ATRIUM: LOCAL COLOR' TO KICK
OFF WITH PUBLIC RECEPTION ON THURSDAY, MAY 22
(May 14, 2008) On Thursday, May 22, the City of Frisco Public Arts
Program will present the city's second 'Art in the Atrium' show. 'Local
Color' will feature paintings by local artists T. Scott Stromberg and Jim
VanKirk. The show will take place on all five floors of the George A.
Purefoy Municipal Center, with the art of T. Scott Stromberg located on
the first, second, and fifth floors and the art of Jim VanKirk located on
the third and fourth floors and stairwells. The reception will happen
from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the atrium of the municipal center. The
Robert Leahey Group, a local jazz band, will perform. Hors d'oeuvres will
be provided by Uncle Julio's.
T. Scott Stromberg, a member of the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco, works
primarily in acrylics to create deeply personal and highly spontaneous
works. The artist has a love of abstraction, using competing color and
texture to create vibrant compositions. As his grandfather was a jazz
musician, images of jazz musicians feature prominently in many of his
paintings. Another common subject is the Mediterranean landscape.
Stromberg describes the creative process saying, "As I work through each
piece, there comes a time when the visual noise of color, pattern, and
subject become silent; only then can I know that the artwork is complete."
Jim VanKirk has been creating art for more than three decades. Also a
member of the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco, the artist works primarily in
oils to create highly cerebral paintings. After spending many years
working in the center of the art world, New York, Jim VanKirk became
frustrated with the redundancy of contemporary art. He moved first to
California, then to Texas, reconciling the concepts of post-modern art
with the historically rich genre of landscape. Jim VanKirk describes the
artistic process saying, "A painting is about a line problem; it's about a
color problem; it's about a painting problem. If I define it ahead of
time, it's not free to become what it can become and I am bound by the
definition."

exhibit inside the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center through Friday, July
18.
